This group held its 1st meeting in Melun (77 - France) on Thursday 4th, October 2007 for the first symposium on road safety and driving licence.
The European trade union group, ETUG-DLRS, reminds that all the political and social stakeholders know that traffic (whether for a professional drive or on the way from home to the workplace) is one of the biggest cause of death among the workers, and its consequence is one of biggest cause of their absenteeism). Taking these remarks into account, the ETUC-DLRS demands road safety to be taken as an fundamental element for well fare and safety at work.
The ETUG-DLRS states that for users, in terms of road safety consciousness raising, the driving test represents the focal point in the educational continuum. The driving test shows the aims and the minimum practical abilities to be reached during the training. The ETUG-DLRS claims that the driving test must remain a prerogative of the States, whatever they are, regulators or operators.
Road safety, and within it, the access to the driving licence, must be considered as one of the workers' fundamental rights at international level. Looking at figures shows that developing countries pay a higher price in terms of traffic injuries and deaths than the industrialized countries).
At the European level, the ETUG-DLRS demands the harmonization of the contents and practical criteria for the driving test, complying with environmental standards and sustainable development The European trade-union group demands to maintaining a service ensuring the national cohesion in the way of organising the driving exams in each country of our European trade-union group.
The ETUG-DLRS is committed to set up all efforts to make share and reach its demands.
